Altars to the spirit of money, prayers to the Orishas
El Derecho, photo series (2017) has been shown at SOMArts (San Francisco), Lucas Lucas (Brooklyn), Ithaca College, and featured in Spotlight Contemporary Art Magazine.
“These altars are my response and rebellion against the forces of inequity and poverty I felt were pervasive in my life and communities. I gave offerings and created altars, drawing from my own lineages. I did it quietly and purposefully, and found deep solace in doing so. I created these at dawn, as I was awakened by vivid images. They nurtured my desire to harvest literal wealth from destitution, and to allow ritual work to heal the wounds of disempowerment and the exhaustion of survival.”
